* I'm fairly new to internet gaming.
* I own a PS3, but don't own an X-Box 360, so I've no idea how the original XBLA version is.
* I'm familiar with the arcade "Pac-Man" and "Ms. Pac-Man", but I know zilch when it comes to other Pac-Man titles in the years since.
So, how's "Pac-Man: Championship Edition DX"? It's incredible, and you'd be doing yourself a tremendous favor to purchase it. At first, it doesn't look like the game gives you a whole lot to. You get about 10 boards to play in, and all you do is either Score Attack (rack up as many points in 5 or 10 minutes) Time Trials (collect all the dots before a certain time limit), or Ghost Attack (take out as many Ghost trails as possible - more on that later).
But although it seems light at first, it's incredibly addictive. On average, there are 2 Score Attacks, 10 Time Trials, and 1 Ghost Attack per gaming board. That's a lot more content than it looks, believe me. You'll be plowing through one gaming session after another, getting sucked in for hours at a time.
So, how does this game play? It's basically like old-school "Pac-Man", where you control the iconic yellow guy, collect the dots, avoid the Ghosts, and try to survive. But man, this "Championship Edition DX" version really amps up the presentation and intensity. You don't finish off a board, and then move onto the next level. Instead, when you clear one half of the gaming board, the opposite reshapes, with plenty of Ghosts waiting to hunt you down. Before you know it, the Gaming Speed picks up, you have a few dozen Ghosts trailing you, the boards keep changing because you keep clearing them. It's a white-knuckling experience of the highest order. There's no profound reason why it works except that it's easy to play, and fun to master.
There are a few other unconventional tweaks to the gameplay. When Pac-Man is about to hit by a Ghost, the game will slow down a bit, giving you a chance to maneuver your escape. There's also a Bomb feature, where you can use a bomb to send all the Ghosts back to their hive in the middle of the gameboard. There's a small number of people who hate that you can Bomb your way out of trouble. Well, her's a tip: They're optional, and you can play the entire game without ever using them if you so desire.
What else is there to say? Whenever you choose a game board, you get to choose from about 8 different color designs, the appearance of Pac-Man and the Ghosts, the level of difficulty, and the music. You can set this all on Auto if you don't give a crap about any of that.
And what does it all add up to? Simple. You get some easy PS3 Trophies, and get your scores posted. Now, if you're like me, you think leaderboards and scoreboards are stupid. But when it comes to arcade-style games like this, I promise you'll be checking just how good you really are. There's nothing like acheiving a great 10-minute high-score, only to find you're only about halfway up the ranking board. "pac-Man: Championship Edition DX" does a great job of letting you know exactly how well you're doing compared with other players, thanks to a very simple stat-tracking system.
"Pac-Man: Championship DX" is a terrific game. Even if you hate games that are all about high scores, I'd beg you to reconsider. I promise if you download the demo, you'll want the rest of the package.
