I purchased this right as it came out, mainly because I saw the fishing rod peripheral. I wasn't a huge fan of other Rapala games, so I was a little hesitant at first. I must say, hands down, this is one of the best new age fishing games I've played, probably THE best. The graphics are good, the gameplay is even better, and most of all I was uber impressed with how many species of fish are on this game. Bass, channel cat, flatheads, bullheads, freshwater eel, black and white crappie, walleye, trout, huge sturgeon, stripers, white bass, muskie, pike and many others I missed.
The only problem I have is with the fishing pole. It essentially works great, except for one thing. You have to twist the rod left and right to pull on the fish and keep it in the middle of the screen. If you reel while the fish is off to the left or right, you lose your hookset. You end up spending all of your time trying to get the pole to register that your are pulling left or right. It takes FOREVER to get in a decent fish this way.
I switched over to the regular PS3 controller, in which you only have to push left and right on the R stick to pull the fish back to middle. It is MUCH easier and you don't waste your whole challenge time allotment on one fish. In this aspect, it is actually a fairly easy game to play.
All in all this is a GREAT fishing game, and the fishing rod periph is really neat, but doesn't quite cut it during gameplay. It's sad too, because otherwise it works flawlessly. If you want the kids to be wowed, get the game/reel combo. If you just want a good fishing game to play for yourself, you'd probably be better off saving some dough and buying the game alone.
