(More customer reviews)This review is based on testing the unit with a 60GB PS3.
At the time I am writing this review Amazon does not have a photo available for this unit, which is a shame because shoppers would be able to see how well the cooling unit joins with the PS3.
Though I have not heard any complaints of a PS3 overheating, the long-term effects are still unknown and I wanted to preserve my investment since the 60GB system (with the PS2 Emotion Engine installed for maximum backward compatibility) has been discontinued. I use the system to play games and watch movies on a regular basis, and after marathon game sessions I have noticed the system has felt fairly warm.
So, I was very pleased to see an almost instant effect from the Pelican cooling unit. Within minutes, the system was noticeably cooler to the touch and though the air coming out of the side vent was still warm, it was considerably cooler. It's worth mentioning that the cooling unit is designed so that two of the four exhaust fans are located on the bottom if you're playing with your system laying flat, therefore for maximum efficiency you should stand your PS3 up and place the cooling fan on top. Nevertheless, the unit does an excellent job of cooling down my system even with two fans blocked.
The cooling system comes with matching trim to blend in with the PS3 and does not need to be attached to the system with screws or hooks. A thin base tab allows the weight of the PS3 to keep the unit in place when laying flat, or the unit can simply be placed on top of an upright system and its own weight will keep it in place. Once setup, the system looks nearly identical as before, only slightly wider/taller.
The cooling system runs on its own AC power, but the temperature monitor is a great additional feature that automatically puts the unit in standby mode once the system has reached a certain temperature. After playing games on the system for nearly two hours, I turned the PS3 off and within three minutes the cooling fans had shutdown as well.
I would deduct a half-star if I could because the unit is not quite "whisper quiet." The fans are louder than the PS3. However, average TV volume is enough to drown out the sound. Not a big deal, and definitely not worth deducting a full star from an otherwise great accessory for the PS3. I would fully recommend this cooling unit to anyone interested in taking an extra step in preserving their PS3 system.
